When I try to Import video files from my Sony camcorder (AVCHD) it just sits and spins for hours for a 20 sec. video clip. I though PD365 recognized .mts files.

It depends on the encoding format that your .mts video is actually encoded.
Is it a AVC 10-bit file or in 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 chroma subsampled?
The above are both not supported by PD currently.
And, it seems you tried to import a video piece from a AVCHD disc folder. I'm not sure if the subsidiary video piece inside an AVCHD folder can act as an individual video file without any crucial info loss.
Try re-encode the video into MP4 or MKV format, and import the converted one. The re-encoding can usually resolve most of import problems.
